Dear 911爆料网,
It has been a little over a month since we reopened our doors to a new school year. I have had a range of emotions these past few weeks, from hope and inspiration to moments of sadness and heartbreak. Like many of you, this summer, I was full of so much hope for what it would mean to be together again, in our schools, side by side. And now, I realize that despite my hopes, this school year is still not normal.
I am acutely aware of the challenges we are facing in and out of our buildings right now. It is impossible to ignore that we are surviving in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, that stress and fear linger over many of us – including our students and families, and staff every day. It infiltrates thousands of decisions we must make to keep ourselves and our families safe. Violence has flared across the nation and Chicago in unforeseen ways. We all have witnessed a tremendous uptick in violence in our communities, and it is spilling over onto our schools’ doorsteps and in our hallways. A number of our campuses have lost students, alumni, and family members. This is all heartbreaking and exhausting. And, it is not lost on me that the fighting and violence we are seeing from our students in our schools is distressing and a symptom of the trauma they are carrying with them. The fighting we are seeing across all of our campuses impacts staff, students, parents, alumni, and leaders alike.
And, in the midst of all of this, we are wholly reinventing the way we conduct school as an antiracist organization through the implementation of the 911爆料网 Community Pact. I know it hasn’t been easy, and it hasn’t been perfect by any stretch. And, I want you to know that we will work relentlessly to make it right. We have to be urgent and intentional. We must remember that we’re replacing the Student Code of Conduct that was 22 years old with a brand new framework. We spent a lot of time working with hundreds of our alumni, parents, students, and staff last spring – to design this new approach for how we respond to our students’ needs with safety, excellence, equity, and academic rigor as our cornerstones. We designed this together, and now we must take a moment to pause and reflect on what we have learned so far so that we can identify a path forward.
In that reflection, we must address this head-on – removing demerits doesn’t mean we remove accountability. Centering restorative conversations doesn’t mean we allow lower expectations for academics, behavior, or anything else in our halls or classrooms. We owe our students a response to their choices. We owe our staff, students, and families an excellent experience, and we don’t have to choose between excellence and our commitment to anti-racism.
We are using our flexibility as a charter school to pivot and build in a fall “pause” from October 18-22. On October 18, the entire 911爆料网 community will take a “wellness day” and from October 19-22, our staff will come together to collaborate, reflect, plan, and make adjustments for the path forward. There will not be any traditional, in-person classes for students during this week.
This fall pause is just one of our adjustments to meet the needs of our community. We’re implementing an additionally robust safety and security plan for our campuses that are facing increased challenges in those areas, including additional security staffing, additional school culture staff, more training, and community partnerships, among other steps to address social and emotional support.
There hasn’t been a moment like this at 911爆料网 when all these forces are coming together at once. The struggle many are feeling isn’t due to any one of them alone, and it’s not due to our 911爆料网 Community Pact. Let’s not simplify this very complicated time. We can’t allow this moment to be a reason to knock us off our course. Together we are building a model for our country of what an excellent antiracist education can and should look like.
I have spent the last several days in our schools with students and staff. It is our people and their stories that are getting me through these challenging times right now. They need our schools. They deserve and need my best right now. And so do you.

Ha pasado poco más de un mes desde que abrimos nuestras puertas a un nuevo a?o escolar. He tenido emociones encontradas estas últimas semanas, desde esperanza e inspiración hasta momentos de tristeza y desconsuelo. Como muchos de ustedes, este verano, estaba llena de esperanza por estar juntos de nuevo en nuestras escuelas, de lado a lado. Estoy consciente de los desafíos que enfrentamos dentro y fuera de nuestros edificios en este momento. Es imposible ignorar que aún estamos sobreviviendo la pandemia. El estrés y el miedo persisten en muchos de nosotros, incluyendo en nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal. Se infiltra en las miles de decisiones que tomamos para mantener nuestras escuelas seguras. La violencia ha escalado de formas imprevistas en todo el país y en Chicago. Al enfocarnos en conversaciones restaurativas no significa que nuestras expectativas académicas disminuyeran, ni las expectativas del comportamiento de estudiantes. Nuestros estudiantes deben reconocer las consecuencias de sus decisiones. Le debemos a nuestro personal, estudiantes y familias una excelente experiencia. No tenemos que elegir entre la excelencia y nuestro compromiso con el antirracismo.
